Another Run in the books....

I started off the morning at 5:45 am. Big Blue Madness tickets went on sale on Ticketmaster.com at 6am. I had 4 tickets and was very excited. I picked my shipping method and hit the continue button. After that, things went south. It said it could not process my request and to redo it. By the time I got back in to redo it, the tickets were gone. I WAS PISSED. I called Mike later and he was not able to get any online either. A similiar thing happened to him, so we were both pissed.

I drove to the church to meet Rich and Mickey to run this morning at 6:30am. When I got there I powered up my Garmin so it would be ready to go. It instantly went to showing the battery was low and cut off. I didn't have it connected good overnight, so it didn't charge. I was beginning to wonder if anything would go right today.

Rich and Mickey got there and we got ready to run. They were doing 16 miles today. I wanted to do more, but I didn't want to push it. I had in my head to get 6 miles today. They decided to run a 6 mile loop, resupply with water, then run another 5 mile loop. After another water stop to resupply, they wer e going to finish their last 5 miles. I was running the 1st 6 mile loop with them.

We got started and the pace was good for me. I was hoping I was not slowing them down. When I asked, they said I was not because they had to do 16 miles and were not planning on a blazing pace. We talked and cut up the whole time running. They 1st 4 miles went by quick. I felt good and my knee was outstanding. As we clocked the last 2 miles, I was thinking of pushing for 8 miles before calling it a day. We discussed it, but decided I didn't need to push a good thing. So when we got to the 1st water resupply for them I stopped. We had ran the 1st 6 miles in alittle over 57 mins. Not that bad!!! I was happy with it anyway. They quickly grabbed new water bottles and headed off for the next 5 mile loop. I streched out some and then headed home. I drank my usual Endurance Fuel drink and took a shower. I iced my knee down for about 30 mins or so just to be safe. I plan on hitting 7 or 8 miles on Monday morning. Wish me luck!!!!!!

It has been awhile since I last bogged

Sorry it has been awhile since I have blogged. I have been busy with Fall Baseball with my son and Fall Soccer with my daughter. Well, I tried to run 1 1/2 miles after I ran the 1st mile after injury. I made it 1.25 miles before my knee started it hurt. I stopped running and just walked home. Later that day at therapy, my knee hurt almost everytime I did an exercise. I kept going to therapy and took another week and a half off.

I went back to running and got 2 miles done. I ran at night when it was cooler. My knee felt fine, but I kept thinking about it while I ran and I thought it was going to hurt. I stopped after 2 miles because I didn't want to push it too much. I rested the next day and was happy when I woke up and my knee was not sore at all. I did ice it down afterwards for about 30-45 mins. After resting a day, I ran 3 miles the next time. It felt good and there was no pain. I iced down my knee again just to be safe. I awoke the next morning without pain. After resting another day, I ran 4 miles Tuesday night. The last 1/2 mile or so I had to work to keep my breathing down. Miss a month of running and you will lose your wind quick. I ran that 4 miles at a 10 min per mile pace. The next day when I got up, I was still pain free. I rested yesterday and tried to get ready for 5 miles today.

I tried to get up at 5am to run, but when the alarm went off, I hit the snooze button. It was still dark outside and it was hard to get up. I chickened out and reset the alarm for 6:30am to get up for work. I felt bad today at work for not getting up and made plans to run this afternoon before my daughter's soccer practice. Of course, this afternoon was warm, but atleast there was a good breeze. I started out and rain my 1st mile a little quicker than I had planned. I wanted to run around 10 min miles, but the 1st mile was 8 1/2 mins. I slowed down some because I knew that just starting back, I could never do 5 miles at that pace. I ran the 1st 3 1/2 miles pretty good, but the last 1 1/2 miles almost killed me. My side and lungs got to burning, but I pushed through it to finish all 5 miles. Five miles on the same road sucks. My rode is a little over .25 miles long and I am the 1st house on my street. So if I run to the end of the road and back it is 1/2 mile. I got really tired of looking at the same stuff over and over again. I have to run on my street because my wife is at work and I got my kids. They rode their bikes probably 4 miles of the 5 that I ran.

I plan on rest tomorrow and running 5 to 6 miles on Saturday. I want to run the Harvest Moon 10K in White House in October. I would LOVE to run the 1/2 marathon in Nashville on Oct. 4th, but I will not be ready for that. Maybe I can hit the 10 Miler in Goodlettsville in Nov. Once my knee is 100% and I am fully confident in it, I will start back to training for a marathon.

Well I done it....

I ran a mile today for the 1st time since injuring my left knee. I ran it at a 9:30 pace. I was trying for 10-11 min pace, but it was hard to run that slow. I was happy that I ran a mile and didn't die after not running for 3 1/2 weeks. My knee felt good. I thought a couple of times that it was going to start hurting, but I think i was just concentrating on it too much. If I just get out there and run and not think about it, I think I will be ok. Both my knees ached a bit after running, but they have not done it in a while. I plan on running 1 1/2 to 2 miles on Monday morning before going to work. If that goes well, I will run 2 to 2 1/2 on Wednesday. I plan on running every other day until I get back up to 3 1/2 miles. When I get there, I will probably get back to training for a marathon granted I am not having any issues with my knee.

Good News!!!!

I went to the doctor today and he told me I could start running again. BUT, I have to start out slow on a flat surface. He wanted me to walk 3 miles and then rest the next day to see if my knee would hurt. If it didn't, I could run 1/2 to 1 mile and then rest a day. If everything was good, then I could run 2 or 3 miles. If I get to 3 miles ok, I plan on running 3 miles a day for 4 or 5 days to test it more. If that is good, then I plan on getting back to running 5 to 6 miles. I don't think I will be able to run the 1/2 marathon in October though. But I would rather heal up good, than hurt after every run.

I walked 3.25 miles today in 50 mins. I know it ain't a blistering pace, but it was still a good test for my knee. Everything felt great afterwards, so I am looking forward to Friday and running a mile.

Physical therapy is going well too. I have 5 more sessions and we are going to start doing some more intense things to strengthen my legs this Friday.

More later....

Man do I miss running....

I have been out since Aug. 10th and MAN DO I MISS RUNNING!!!! My son woke us up sick this morning at 3:45 am. I was making a run to town at 4:30 am for meds so I just stayed up afterwards. 5 o'clock rolls around and it is still dark outside and cool from the overnight rain. All I could think about was going for a run. My therapy is going well. My knee as not hurt in over a week and I am itching to test it out. I can't run though until after I see my ortho again on Sept. 3rd. If he clears me, I have 31 days to get ready for the half marathon in Nashville. Not sure I will be ready to run a blasting number, but hopefully I can just finish.

Oh by the way, if anyone sees my MP3 player lying around, please send it back to me. I am going NUTS without it!!!!

Till next time......

Well...here I sit...

I'm watching the Olympic marathon right now and these guys are floating. I don't think they can run the whole race on a 4:45 pace.

I went to the ortho on Wed. I have a strained LCL in my left knee. I have a brace on it right now that I have to wear for 2 weeks straight. I go back on Sept. 3rd. If I have no pain, I can start running again slowly. They want me to run 1/2 mile and see how it does and then SLOWLY increase back up to training. I told them I had a 1/2 marathon in Oct. and I still wanted to do it. They said I would be able too. If my knee is still hurting when I go back, they are going to do a MRI to see what else is going on. After 3 days of wearing the brace, my knee feels great, but they told me not to run on it. That sucks, cause I really, really miss running for some reason. If I dont get back to running, I am going to be HUGE!!!! I started physical therapy on Thursday and I have to go twice a week. I got exercises to do at home too 5 days a week. My knee cap is tilted to one side, so they are doing strength training to help straigthen it up before it gives me problems too. By the time I get to run again, it will be almost a month since I injuried it. I hope it is good so I can get back to training for the 1/2 marathon. Well, I will post more later. It is hard to watch TV and type this out......

Starting of week 2 of boredom....

Well, I'm out again this week. I still have pain in my left knee and it sucks!!! It is fine when I am walking, but I'm still feel the pain off and on. It hurts going up and down stairs some. The pain has moved to the back of my knee also on the lateral side. I got an appointment with an ortho doctor who did the surgeries on both my niece's knees next Friday. I wish I would get is somewhere sooner to have an MRI or something done. It is killing me not being able to run and to know what is going on with my knee. Rich said he would run with me Saturday for 2 or 3 miles if I can. He is planning on 10 miles Saturday. Wish I could do it all with him. Well, I will keep ya posted on what is going on with it. I need to get back to running or I will gain back the 22 pounds I have lost. I seem to be eatting everything in site!!!! 'Till next time......

What I was afraid of....

Well this week has been a boring week, I have not run any and found that I miss it. It is funny how something that sucks while you are doing it can grow on you. Oh wait, that is work in general...hehehe. Anyway, my knee felt better on Wednesday and Thursday. I had just a little pain and soreness here and there when I stepped wrong or turned to quick. I found out Thursday afternoon that I would be training with the county ERT (SWAT) on Friday morning. I was excited, but worried about my knee. The training went well. I made it through it. We ran right at a mile. My knee hurt, but once I sped up some, it was bearable. I also found out Thursday night that Rich and Mickey were running today at 7am. They were going for 8 miles today. I was excited about getting to run again with these guys. I got up at 6:30am and got dressed and streched out. I walked down to Rich's house to meet him and Mickey. We started running and my knee felt good. But it didn't last long. I made it about 1/2 a mile before I needed to stop. I knew I could not run 8 miles so I just shut it down for fear of hurting my knee anymore. So, as I am typing this, Mickey and Rich are out running 8 miles and I am sitting here. I am going to call Monday morning to get an appointment to have it checked out. I post up what the results are. Have a good weekend. I have to prepare for my wife's 40th birthday party tonight and her actual birthday tomorrow.

The start of Week 3....

Well Monday morning when I woke up, I thought some cut my left leg off at the knee. My knee was sooooo sore that I could barely bend it. I started to get alittle worried that I might have done something bad to it. Thank goodness Monday was a rest day. I went on to work and hobbled around all day. I talked to our medical director about it and he said I was getting to old to run that far...hehehe. He told me to stay off of it and not run again until the pain was gone. If it kept hurting, he told me to go see an ortho. By mid afternoon it was feeling alittle better and I could atleast bend my knee all the way with out it killing me. I ate enough anti-inflamatory meds that I figured I would wake up with my liver beside me....hehehe. My knee slowly felt better all day and when I went to bed that night, it was not hurting much at all except with I moved side to side. I figured I should hold off on the scheduled 5-6 miles on Tuesday.

I woke up Tuesday morning and my knee was alittle sore. After an hour or so, it felt good. I still have some movements that cause pain, but all in all, it is 100% better that Sunday night. I talked to a guy I work with who was an ortho PA in CA. He checked my knee out and pushed and pulled all over my knee. It didn't hurt and he said I probably just strained the cartliage or tendon on the lateral side of my knee. He recommended taking the week off and getting a better pair of running shoes. When he found out that I am getting blisters alot on my left arch and that my left ankle had hurt for 2 months when I started, he knew what it was. He said I was compensating for my ankle and causing my knee pain. He said I was also landing on my left foot different when I ran and it was causing the blisters. After everyone saying take a break from running, I figured I would give it until Thursday before attempting to run again. I plan on doing 2 to 3 slow miles on Thursday to test my knee. Mickey said he and Rich are running 7 or so miles on Saturday and he said to come run with them. I hope my knee is better so I can. Those two will help me out a ton and I can't wait to get to run so good training runs with them. They are planning on running the 1/2 marathon in the 'boro on Oct. 11th, so I think I may do that one instead of the one in Nashville on Oct. 4th. If I can stay healthy......

The rest of week 2....

Wednesday and Thursday I found excuses not to run. I was supposed to run 3 miles on Wednesday and 4 miles on Thursday. Rather it was thinking it was raining, or just being lazy, I didn't run. Sometimes I find it hard to find the motivation to get up and run. I love running and I love the feeling I get after a good long run, but it is hard to get up and do it sometimes. I don't know how the elite runners do it day after day.

Well, Friday rolled around and it was a scheduled rest day. I thought of running on Friday to make up for the 2 days i missed, but again, I made excuses. I told myself that since I didn't run for 3 days, I would try and set a new personal record at the Garden Spot 5K in Franklin, KY on Saturday. So with that in mind, I chilled out with the family and registered my kids for school. My daughter starts kindergarden this year and my son is in 3rd Grade.

Saturday morning I got up at 0545hrs and got ready to head out to Franklin, KY. I could not find anyone to go with me, so i ventured out solo on this race. I got to the race about 0630hrs and made my way to the registration table to get signed up. It was only $15 to run, not bad!!!! I got signed up and got my FREE shirt. It was kinda plain, but better than the Strawberry Stride one. I put everything back in my truck and got my race stuff on. I milled around and warmed up until the race was about to start. I did run about 1/2 mile or so to warm up. I moved close to the front of the pack for the start so I could get out with the fast guys and not get enclosed in runners. When the race started, I took off with the lead pack and stayed right on their hills. The weather was perfect for running! It was mid-60s and not humid. I ran my 1st mile in 7:04. That is the fastest I have ever ran a mile! I knew I could not keep that up, so I slowed down a bit and fell into a steady pace that felt good. I grabbed some water at the 1st station, but it tasted terrible, so I pitched the rest of it into the grass. My watch beeped for mile 2 and I had ran the 1st 2 miles in under 15 minutes. I knew I was on a good pace, but I was feeling the effects of running alittle over my head. At 2.75 miles, there was another water station, so I slowed to a fast walk and took another glass of water. I took a drink and glanced at my watch. It has just turned over 20 minutes. I knew I only had .3 miles left, so I tossed the water and sped up to try and set that new personal record. I pushed as much as I could the last bit, which was not that much because I was tired at this point. I crossed the finish line to the crowd clapping and stopped to catch my breath. Then my watch beeps at me that I under my preset pace upper limit of 8:15. I realized I didn't stop my running watch. When I did stop it, it read 23:52. That was well under my 25:23 that I set at the race on July 4th. I was very pleased with my run and called my wife to let her know. At this time on Sunday night, I am still waiting on the Bowling Green Road Runners Club to post the official times on their website. I ended up 33rd overall, or that is what my card said that they gave me at the end. I know I didn't place in the top 3 of my age group (Male 30-39). I came home after the race and sported my shirt the rest of the day. I told everyone who asked I set a new personal record. My wife is now tired of hearing about it...hehehe.

Sunday came and I awoke at 6am to run again. My left knee was sore, so I just rolled over and went back to sleep. I was supposed to run 6 miles on Saturday and only ran 3 at the race. I planned on running 6-7 miles today to make up for it. I finally got around motivated about 4pm to run. I spend the day at church and then mowing the yard. Noah wanted to run with me, so I told him we would run our road together and then I would continue on without him. I made the mistake of eatting supper at 5:30pm. I figured that would get me when I ran. Noah and I started our run at 6:30pm and ran our road, which is 1/2 a mile down and back. Noah had a new understanding of running after that...hehehe. He did very well and I was proud of him. He came out of his room ready to run with his mp3 player and headphones on just like me. He said he wanted to run with me again this week and I told him I would love too. I continued my run after dropping Noah off at home. I planned on running 6 miles. The weather was good and it was not humid. I felt good after 4 miles and began to think about doing 7 or 8 miles. I made my way back into my neighborhood at 6.5 miles (0.5 miles from my house) feeling pretty good. I had kept a pace of 10 minutes per mile (good for me) the whole way. I passed my house and started running the 2 mile loop of roads in my neighborhood. At about 7.5 miles I thought, heck I can make it 9 miles. So that is what I did. But, at 8.5 miles, my left knee felt like it was going to explode. I slowed to a jog and limped home the last 0.5 miles. I ended my 9 mile run in extreme pain and began to walk to try to recover. After about 100 yards, my left knee felt better, but it still hurt. I walked about 1/2 mile and then headed in the house for something to drink. I fixed my Endurance Fuel and found the closest spot to crash. My wife fixed me an ice pack and I wrapped my knee. After about 30 minutes, I got up to take a shower. My knee was just about locked up. It hurt like hell to flex it, but after I did once or twice, it felt alittle better. I guess I will be eatting anti-inflammatory meds for the next few days. After getting a shower, I rewrapped my knee and started on this blog. After this, I am headed to bed. I guess work will be an adventure tomorrow with a bum knee. Tomorrow starts week 3 too!!!! Thank GOD it is a rest day!!!!!

Here goes week 2

Well, the start of week 2 went very well. Monday was a rest day!!!!!! After running 8 miles on Sunday, my knees and legs needed a day of rest. I also tore the worn skin off my huge blister on my left foot. I was hoping by doing so I would help speed the skin up in getting tougher. After running this morning though, my idea was not a good one. I got another small blister forming in the same spot. I have been caking on the Body Glide trying to keep it from happening. It is probably just my shoe fit. I hope to get new running shoes by the first of Sept. and have them broken in for the Oct. 1/2 marathon.

I found out Sunday at church that I leave for my Honduras mission trip on the same weekend as the Walt Disney World marathon. I guess I will not be running it in 2009. My family and I love WDW and that is where I would LOVE to run my 1st marathon. I am trying to get my wife to head to Las Vegas in Dec. so I can run the 1/2 marathon on our anniversary (Dec. 7th). I guess I will look to run the Country Music Marathon as my 1st marathon and just run WDW marathon in '10. Who knows!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Well, back to running. I got up this morning at 0545hrs and ran my planned 4 miles. The run was a good one. The weather was nice and it was good to be up and running. I downloaded some Eminem to my MP3 player Sunday night, so I listened to it while I ran. My knees were alittle sore for the 1st mile or so, but I found my stride after that. I have found that I feel the most comfortable while running a 9-9 1/2 minute mile. I know that is not blazing fast or anything, but it just seems to be where I feel the best at. I guess a 9 minute mile over 26.2 would not be that bad. After running, I cooled down with a walk down the street. I then drank my usual Endurance Fuel and ate my protein bar. Endurance Fuel is not that bad. It taste pretty good after running. I guess it is doing a good job on helping me recovering after running too. I just tingle all over for about 20 mins after I drank it though. Well, I got to get off of here and go mow the lawn. Now for 3 miles in the morning......

Making up for lost mileage....

Well, since I lost 2 days of training due to weather and me being lazy, I made up for it today. I got up this morning at 07:00am and actually ran. I planned on getting in 6 or 7 miles, but....I did 8 miles!!!! I was dead after it too. I came straight in the house and died on the bathroom floor....hehehe. My wife got me my Endurance Fuel and I drank it down in about 2 big gulps. After about 10 minutes, I got up and ran me a cold bath. I sat in that for about 10 minutes and then took a shower. It took about 30 minutes, but I felt pretty good after that. My knees are sore though. I think it is from increasing my running from 3 days a week to 5 days a week. I got one heck of a blister on my left foot too. I went swimming at my mom's house after church with the family. The blister busted while I was there, so I just tore the skin off it. I hope I quit getting them, or a calius forms....one or the other...hehehe. I am looking forward to tomorrow because it is a rest day. Now for some R&R.....

I DID IT!!!

I got up this morning at 05:30am with the alarm clock and ran!!!!! I laid there for 10 mins after the alarm when off and debating on getting up or not, but I got up and ran!. Problem is, today was supposed to be a rest day...hehehe. But with me not running 3 miles on Wednesday and 4 miles yesterday, I decided to run this morning. I only did 4 miles and tried to stay around a 9 min per mile pace. It was nice out too. There was a dense fog when I came out of the house, so it kept the weather cool. Now I have to do 5 miles on Saturday and 3 on Sunday to finish up my 1st week of training. One down, fifteen to go.....

Maybe God has other plans....

I finally got up with the alarm clock this morning, only to be greeted with pouring down rain, thunder, and lightening. I just can't win for losing right now. I got training with the PD this afternoon and it runs until 10pm. So, I guess running is out again today. Tomorrow is a rest day, but I may try and get in 3 to 4 miles. Guess we will see what is in store for me in the morning.....

Well...It happened again

I slept through the alarm clock. I got up at 6:45am this morning and had no time to run. My back up plan was to run while the kids were in VBS. I got changed at church and went out to strech to run at 7:45pm. Then came the rain and lightening. I decided to skip today's running and went back in. Maybe I can get up in the morning for the 4 miles on the schedule for tomorrow....'til next time.....

1st day of new training...or make that night!

I was all set last night to start the new 16 week "Rookie" marathon training program I got off Runner's World.com. I set the alarm clock for 5:30am and was in bed by 10Pm. I didn't sleep all that well, but evidently at 5:30 this morning, I was sleeping hard. When the alarm went off, I rolled over and turned it off and went back to sleep. Jennifer woke me up at 6:15 to ask me if I was running or not. So my 1st training day started out crappy. I decided to run after we got back from VBS at church. So alittle after 9pm I was lacing up my running shoes and streching out getting ready for my 1st 4 miles of this week. Since it was dark, I planned on running inside my neighborhood just to stay in the safety of the street lights along our streets. Well, at 9 o'clock it was still 81 degrees and humid, so I didn't get much of a break. I still churned out 4 miles in alittle over 36 mins, so I was good with that. Now the blister on my left foot is growing though. I caked on the Body Glide, but it got bigger. I will have to keep an eye on it. My left knee was alittle sore and tender again after running. I sat in a cold bath afterwards for about 10 mins hoping that would help. I drank my usual post run Gatoraid and Endurance Fuel. Now it is off to bed to see if I can get up at 5:30 for 3 miles in the morning......

Well, I chickened out.....kinda

I woke up sometime early Saturday morning to the sound of rain, thunder, and lightening. Then the alarm clock when off at 0700hrs and I turned it off. I thought it was raining and storming, so I just went back to bed and didn't get up to run. I found out later from my wife, that it was not raining at 0700hrs. The sun was out and it was pretty. Oh well, atleast I slept well.

I did run on Sunday though. I dropped the kids off at church for VBS and decided to run the roads around my church. I drove home real quick and got my running gear and headed back. I left my church and ran down College St and through Lyon Crest Sub-division. I then when down Hwy 52 and crossed over to Hwy 31. I then came back down Hwy 52 to College St and ended up back at church. It was a 6.75 mile loop. I ended up walking for about 30 secs at 3.4 miles to try and get my left foot to quick hurting. Come to find out, I rubbed a HUGE blister on it while running. My left knee hurt the rest of the night too. It was hurting on the outside of my knee cap. It feels better this morning though.

The new training program for a marathon that I am going to try and start this week has me cross training today for 30 mins. I am going to rest today to make sure the knee is ok and let my blister rest. I am supposed to run 2-3 easy miles tomorrow. We will see how that goes...

Does anyone else set up the night before a long run and debate on how far to go? I have been running 6 to 7 miles, but I want to step up to 8 or 10. I am not sure if I should try for 10 tomorrow or just be happy with 8. I plan on running the half marathon in Oct, so I still have time to build up to it. I think I will just go for 8 and leave the 10 mile run for later. Well, off to bed to get some sleep before tomorrow morning's run. I will post tomorrow on how I did.

My 1st blog entry

I have been checking out blogs over the past few months and thought it looked like something fun to try, so here it goes. I am happily married to my wife Jennifer for 12 1/2 years now. We have 2 kids. Noah is turning 9 in September and Gracie is 5. I work as a Captain at Sumner EMS. I have been there since 1995 and don't plan on going anywhere else. My family and I live a typical small town life. I enjoy time off, hanging out with family, playing my PS3, and driving my mustang. I ALSO LOVE THE KENTUCKY WILDCATS!!!

I was asked to attend an FBI SWAT school back at the beginning of April. We had to run 2 miles a day every day. I have been wanting to get in shape for sometime now, so after completing this class, I continued to run. I was running 2 miles at a time every 2 or 3 days when I first started. It was hard, but I stuck to it. I began to watch what I ate also. At the end of April, I had lost 13 pounds and 2 miles didn't seem that hard anymore. When my nephew graduated this year, he asked me if I wanted to run the Strawberry Stride with him this year. It was the next morning. I said what the heck and told him I would meet him there. Let me tell ya, 3 miles is different from 2 miles. I ran the 1st 2 miles without a problem, but I bet I walked 4 or 5 times during that last 1.1 miles. I finished though, and I loved it. I finished my 1st 5K in 28:50. I know, it is not a great time, but I was happy I finished. I got the running bug after that. I continued to run 3 miles at a time 2 to 3 times a week. I have finished 4 different 5Ks now with my personal record being 25:23 at the White House Parks Independence Day 5K this past July 4th. I plan on running atleast 1 race a month for the rest of the year. I am planning on running the 1/2 marathon in October in Nashville.

I hope to use this blog to log my training and find other runners that want to share stories and tips.
